At Hometown Academy, we talk a lot about STEM — and for good reason. STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math, and it’s more than just a set of school subjects. It’s a way of learning that encourages children to ask questions, explore possibilities, and think critically about the world around them.
We believe STEM skills are life skills. By introducing these concepts in a playful, age-appropriate way, we give children the confidence to experiment, solve problems, and collaborate — skills they’ll carry with them far beyond our classrooms.
Breaking Down STEM
Science: Curiosity and Discovery in Action
Science is about observing, asking questions, and exploring how things work. In our classrooms, science might look like planting seeds and watching them grow, mixing colors to see what happens, or exploring how ice melts in the sun.
Technology: Tools for Tomorrow
Technology in early childhood is about learning to use tools — both digital and physical — to solve problems and create. This can mean coding a friendly robot, exploring shapes on a tablet, or using magnifying glasses to study bugs in the playground.
Engineering: Building Bright Ideas
Engineering is about designing, creating, and improving. We give children open-ended materials to build towers, bridges, and other structures, encouraging them to test their ideas, make changes, and try again.
Math: Patterns, Shapes, and Numbers
Math is everywhere — in counting steps, sorting blocks, measuring ingredients, and recognizing patterns. We make math hands-on and fun, helping children see numbers as a natural part of everyday life.
